As Resident Experience Director for The Kentridge Senior Living, I’ve seen how a strong sense of community transforms senior living. It turns a place to stay into a place to truly thrive. Building connections among residents, team members, and even the surrounding neighborhood isn’t optional — it is essential for well-being, joy, and purpose.
Creating community begins with understanding what makes each resident feel valued and included. It also means designing experiences that spark conversation, laughter, and shared memories. Whether it’s a small group gathering, a holiday celebration, an Act of Service, or a themed event, each moment strengthens relationships and helps residents feel like they belong.

From my perspective, every interaction becomes a chance to weave the fabric of community. When residents feel connected, they enjoy their days more fully and experience the emotional and social benefits of genuine human connection.
To me, community in a senior living setting means feeling truly connected — like you’re part of something bigger than yourself. At The Kentridge, it’s the everyday moments that make this place feel like home. It’s the laughter during morning coffee, the way residents look out for one another, and the friendships that grow during events.
Community here means belonging, comfort, and never feeling alone. It means knowing people by name and noticing when someone needs a little extra support. I’m grateful to help create the conversations, traditions, and shared experiences that help residents feel safe, included, and surrounded by people who care.
Building connections among residents is essential. These relationships bring joy and purpose to daily life. They help residents feel seen and supported, especially those who may have felt lonely or uncertain before moving in. Friendships give people someone to share meals with, laugh with, and talk with. Connection lifts emotional well-being, reduces loneliness, and even improves overall health.
I encourage engagement by creating opportunities that feel natural and welcoming. Not everyone is ready for a large group at first, so I offer small activities like coffee chats, craft tables, or simple games. These moments open the door for easy, pressure-free conversation. I also make personal introductions when I notice shared interests. When residents help plan events or offer ideas, they take ownership and encourage their neighbors to join in. Peer encouragement is powerful.
Above all, my goal is to create an environment where people feel safe, included, and welcomed. When residents feel cared for, they’re more open to connecting — and that’s when the magic happens.

Connecting with the town of Kent is also a joyful part of our culture. We visit local restaurants, participate in acts of service with Kent Social Services, enjoy live entertainment during happy hour, and collaborate with the local senior center. These experiences keep residents active, engaged, and connected to the life and culture of the town they call home.
One of my favorite events is our resident Happy Hour. It offers a warm, relaxed space that encourages conversation, music, and laughter. I love seeing even the quieter residents begin to form new friendships during this time. Those moments truly make our community feel like home.
When a new resident moves in, we want them to feel welcome right away. Our Resident Ambassadors play a huge role in this. They greet new neighbors, show them around, sit with them in the dining room, make introductions, and personally invite them to events. Their kindness helps new residents feel part of our family from the very beginning.
At the heart of The Kentridge, connections are everything. Every conversation, shared laugh, and meaningful moment enriches our community. As Resident Experience Director, I’ve seen how intentional efforts to build these relationships transform daily life — turning our building into a true home and creating memories residents and families treasure.
By prioritizing relationships, engagement, and belonging, we do more than plan events — we build a vibrant, supportive community where everyone can thrive. Ultimately, the connections we nurture make all the difference.
