First Impressions: Creating a Welcoming Community

Category: Senior Living

Author: Coby Morehart, Plant Operations Director

First impressions begin before someone walks through the front door. From the landscaping and building exterior to the lighting, cleanliness, and overall appearance, every detail tells a story. A well-maintained community helps residents, families, and visitors feel welcomed, comfortable, and confident in their surroundings.

As Plant Operations Director at The KentRidge Senior Living, I believe first impressions are shaped by the details people notice as they approach and enter our community. Clean sidewalks, a tidy parking lot, fresh mulch, and welcoming flowerpots all help set the tone.

Once inside, that attention to detail should continue. Clean floors, freshly painted walls, and an inviting atmosphere show visitors that we take pride in maintaining our community.

Even small concerns, such as visible dust, cobwebs, or unpleasant odors, can leave a lasting impression. That is why I believe every detail deserves attention.

Maintaining a Clean and Consistent Appearance

For me, being tour-ready means making sure the community looks and feels welcoming from the moment someone arrives. The vestibule, front entrance, and welcome center should be swept, dusted, and ready to greet visitors.

Hallways should also be clean, with carpets free of noticeable marks and debris. Lighting throughout the building needs to work properly, without burnt-out bulbs affecting the appearance of our spaces.

Paint and wall maintenance are another important part of keeping The KentRidge looking its best. I believe in setting aside regular time to address scuffs, chipped paint, and other appearance concerns.

When there is not enough time to complete every hallway in one week, I rotate through different areas. This approach helps ensure no part of the community goes too long without attention.

Landscaping requires the same consistency. When flowers begin wilting despite regular watering, it may be time to consider replacements.

Mulch can also fade or develop discoloration throughout the season. When that happens, I work with our landscaping team to determine whether it needs replacing or simply refreshing.

Lighting plays a major role in how our community looks and feels. Bright, consistent lighting helps showcase our surroundings and creates a more inviting atmosphere.

When replacing bulbs, I use the same brightness to maintain consistency throughout the hallways. During routine walks, I also check for burnt-out bulbs and fixtures that need attention.

Good lighting can reveal other maintenance concerns, including worn carpeting or damaged walls. While that creates additional work, it also helps us identify areas that need improvement.

Making Time for a Meaningful Improvement

One First Impressions success at The KentRidge involved restoring the appearance of our dining room carpet.

Over time, the carpet had developed noticeable areas that needed a thorough cleaning. I initially tried cleaning smaller sections during available downtime throughout the day.

However, the results were not what I wanted. Working around the normal activity of the dining room made it difficult to give the carpet the attention it needed.

When I came in for a third-shift fire drill, I decided to stay afterward and focus on cleaning the carpet.

With the dining room unoccupied, I could take my time and make additional passes over areas that needed extra attention. I also avoided creating tripping hazards from cleaning equipment and cords during busy hours.

The results were significantly better. By allowing enough time and working when the space was not in use, I was able to improve the carpet’s overall appearance.

This experience offers a practical lesson for other Plant Operations Directors. Sometimes, the key to a successful maintenance project is choosing the right time to complete it.

Scheduling more involved cleaning during low-traffic periods can allow for better results while minimizing disruptions for residents and team members.

For me, first impressions are about creating a clean, comfortable environment that reflects the pride we take in our community. Every maintained walkway, freshened carpet, and working light contributes to that experience.

By staying attentive to the details, we help ensure The KentRidge Senior Living remains a welcoming place residents are proud to call home.
