Culinary Tips and Tricks

Category: Health & Wellness

Author: Karra Belza, Executive Director

As Executive Director at The Kentridge Senior Living, I have a wealth of experience in creating meals that are not only nutritious but also delicious and satisfying. Over the years, I’ve picked up countless tricks that make cooking easier, more flavorful, and even a little more fun. I want to share my best-kept secrets—unexpected ingredient pairings, must-have pantry staples, underrated kitchen tools, and game-changing techniques that can transform the way you cook. Whether you’re a beginner looking to sharpen your skills or a seasoned cook hoping to elevate your dishes, these expert insights will inspire you to get creative in the kitchen.

Underrated Tools and Smart Pantry Staples

Every cook should have a bench scraper or dough scraper. This underrated tool helps scoop and transfer chopped ingredients from the cutting board to the pan. It also works beautifully for portioning brownies, dough, or even dividing casseroles—much more precise than a standard knife.

For quick and delicious meals, I always stock pasta, rice, mustard, and canned beans. Pasta offers endless options: garlic and oil, tomato-based, creamy, or broth-style. Rice pairs with everything from stir-fries to bowls. Mustard enhances dressings, glazes, and marinades. And canned beans—like chickpeas or black beans—are ideal for soups, stews, tacos, or even mashed into patties.

If you’re new to the kitchen, start with the basics: sautéing, boiling, simmering, pan-searing, and solid knife skills. Early in my career, I learned a game-changing technique—starting with a cold pan and then adding oil and garlic. Slowly heating this mix infuses the oil with flavor without burning the garlic.

Creative Pairings and Restaurant-Quality Results

Some pairings may seem unusual at first but truly deliver. I love the refreshing combo of watermelon, feta, and mint. For dessert, dark chocolate with olive oil and sea salt is a savory-sweet treat, and pineapple with chili powder brings unexpected sweet heat.

For the perfect pasta, salt the water like the sea. Save a bit of starchy water before draining—it emulsifies the sauce, especially creamy or buttery ones. When making steak, I pat it dry, season generously, and sear in a hot pan without crowding. After flipping it once, I baste it with butter, garlic, and herbs, then let it rest like it’s on vacation. That pause ensures the juices settle perfectly.

To finish a home-cooked meal with restaurant-quality flair, add a final touch. A drizzle of good olive oil or a sprinkle of flaky sea salt brings everything together. These small details make a big impact.

Mastering these culinary tips and tricks will elevate your home cooking. Simple techniques can transform everyday meals into something extraordinary. By applying what I’ve learned throughout my career, you’ll cook with more confidence, creativity, and flavor every day.
