Welcoming With Heart: How Resident Ambassadors Transform the Move-In Experience

Category: Senior Living

Author: Ariel Jones, Resident Services Director

Moving into a senior living community is a major life transition. There is often excitement about new opportunities and friendships. There can also be uncertainty as residents adjust to a new home and routine.

One of the most valuable resources we have during that transition is our Resident Ambassador program. Resident Ambassadors help create connections and offer encouragement. They also provide peer-to-peer support that can make a new resident feel welcome from day one.

Their willingness to reach out matters. They share their experiences and invite others into community life. In doing so, they help turn neighbors into friends and a community into home.

As Resident Services Director at The KentRidge, I have seen firsthand the difference these resident leaders make. They help new residents feel comfortable, connected, and engaged.

Building a Welcome Through Teamwork

A successful move-in experience takes collaboration. The goal is for the resident to feel at home, welcomed, and supported. Department head involvement, Resident Ambassador introductions, community engagement, and family reassurance all help make that happen.

From a Resident Services perspective, the goal is simple. The new resident should not feel like they are navigating the transition alone. Each introduction and invitation helps build comfort. Each friendly face makes the community feel more familiar.

Resident Ambassadors play an important role in that process. Many ambassadors are active in men’s and women’s events. These gatherings often create easy introductions for new residents. They can connect with others who share similar interests or backgrounds. Smaller weekly gatherings can also feel less overwhelming. They may help residents feel ready for larger events, such as happy hour or bingo.

Turning Small Connections Into Belonging

Some of the most meaningful welcomes are also the most personal. One-on-one conversations and meal invitations can reassure a new resident. They show that someone has noticed them. That personal touch can create acknowledgement, companionship, and belonging.

Recently, a new resident moved into The KentRidge and seemed to prefer being alone. He often ate by himself in the dining room. He also did not appear very engaged in community life. After a few conversations, the Resident Services Director learned something helpful. He had retired from the same company as one of the community’s ambassadors, Lew.

That shared background created a natural opportunity for connection. Lew was encouraged to invite him to share a meal or enjoy coffee. Since then, the new resident has been seen around the community more often. He also seems to feel more at home. One meaningful moment came when he signed up for the Men’s Monthly Luncheon. It showed that he was open to more connections beyond that first friendship.

Two senior men at The Kentridge Senior Living smile brightly, enjoying desserts.

That experience showed how much one conversation can matter. Sometimes, a resident begins to feel at home when someone understands a piece of their past.

Residents often respond quickly to other residents because peer connection is powerful. Team members can have wonderful conversations with residents. Still, there is often a generational difference that team members cannot fully replace. Companionship with someone in the same life stage can feel especially comforting. So can friendship with someone living in the same community.

Resident Ambassadors shape the culture of the community in a meaningful way. They are often one of the first peer interactions new residents have. Because of that, they can influence how someone feels about their new home. Through support, friendship, and encouragement, they help create a culture built on belonging. They transform small connections into friendship, support, and a lasting sense of home.

Resident Ambassadors do far more than welcome new residents. They help build the culture of our community. Through kindness, friendship, and a willingness to include others, they create an environment where people feel seen, valued, and connected.

The move-in process may only last a few days. The relationships formed during that time can have a lasting impact. We are grateful for the Resident Ambassadors who help make our community a place where every resident feels like they belong.
