Staff Spotlight: Why We Choose Senior Living Culinary

Category: Culinary

Author: Mason Lancaster, Culinary Director

Every great meal starts with someone who cares.

Behind every breakfast served, every decorated brunch buffet, and every favorite recipe prepared is a team of dedicated culinary professionals who choose to make a difference every single day. While many cooks, servers, and dishwashers could work in traditional restaurants, they have chosen a different path—one where the people they serve become neighbors, friends, and even family.

In this Staff Spotlight, we’re highlighting the incredible individuals who make our dining programs special. Their stories remind us that senior living is about much more than preparing and serving meals—it’s about creating comfort, building relationships, celebrating life’s moments, and making every resident feel at home.

We asked members of our culinary teams to share why they chose senior living and what makes this work so meaningful. Here are their stories.

A Change of Pace With Greater Purpose

As Culinary Director at The KentRidge, I came to senior living after 11 years in the restaurant industry. At first, I was looking for a change of pace. I also wanted a better work-life balance.

What I found was work that felt more personal. In a restaurant, guests can choose another place if the menu is not for them. In senior living, residents rely on the dining team every day.

That changes the responsibility. It teaches patience and flexibility. It also means learning how to adjust food to specific tastes and needs.

Residents have taught me to listen closely. Even when the menu is not someone’s favorite, there are ways to make the experience better. That may mean adjusting a dish, remembering a preference, or finding another way to help someone enjoy their meal.

Listening, Adjusting, and Creating Connection

Success in a senior living dining program takes compassion. Culinary skill matters, but the work is about more than what happens in the kitchen. It is about listening to residents, understanding their feedback, and building real relationships.

Getting to know residents makes the dining experience more personal. Their likes, dislikes, routines, and favorite meals all matter. Those details help create a stronger sense of comfort and trust.

One favorite tradition is the monthly Candlelight Dinner. It gives the culinary team a chance to be creative and show their skills. It also offers residents a more elevated dining experience.

Big events and brunches bring that same feeling of purpose. The feedback from residents and families means a great deal. Hearing their appreciation makes the hard work worth it.

Those moments show how dining can bring people together. A well-planned meal or special event can create joy, connection, and shared memories. It is a reminder that this work can make a meaningful difference for residents and the people who love them.

Every member of our culinary team has a unique story, but they all share one thing in common—a passion for serving others.

Whether they’re preparing a resident’s favorite comfort food, celebrating a birthday, or simply greeting someone with a smile, their work goes far beyond the kitchen. They create moments of joy, foster meaningful relationships, and help make our communities feel like home.

To every cook, server, dishwasher, and culinary leader who chooses senior living over a traditional restaurant, thank you. Your compassion, dedication, and commitment to hospitality make a lasting impact on the lives of our residents every single day.

Together, we’re not just serving meals—we’re serving memories.
