The Kentridge Senior Living Executive Director Shares How She Got Her Start in Senior Living

Category: Senior Living

Author: Kellie McElhiney, Executive Director

Senior living has certainly changed over the past decade. An industry that once provided very little hands-on care has blossomed into a wonderful option for older adults. It now provides varying levels of assistance with residents’ activities of daily living, while arranging many opportunities for socialization and community. I am fortunate to work for Arrow Senior Living leading The Kentridge Senior Living team. I would like to share a little about my journey to becoming a senior living leader.

I was a State Tested Nursing Assistant for the company LTC in the mid 90s-2000, then I became a Licensed Practical Nurse. I went back to college and received both an undergrad and master’s degree but continued to work as a nurse until I found professional development in my current field. I was asked to fill in as the interim Executive Director, then nine months later was promoted to Executive Director of The Kentridge.

My passion of caring for people during a vulnerable time in their life and making sure I defend their rights and their dignity, is what keeps me in senior living. Arrow Senior Living’s core values spoke to me, and I believe in them. I like that Arrow celebrates new ideas and has flexibility.

In the coming months and years, I see our industry growing in reputation, in occupancy, and as a leader in employee relationships. Someone considering a career in senior living management should know it’s a passionate job with relentless hours of hard work, tears, and sweat; however, it’s worth every minute of it, because it’s the only job you’ll ever love this much.

Arrow Senior Living and I invite you to reach out and learn more about a career in senior living. Working in this industry can be incredibly rewarding and fulfilling. Whether you’re interested in caregiving, management, or another aspect of senior living, there are a wide variety of roles available that allow you to make a positive impact on the lives of older adults and their families.
